about
Have you ever stopped to listen to the sound of an insect or investigated the sounds that sticks make when they crash together? Do you listen to birds sing? Natural sound is all around us. Join Teaching Artist and professional musician Louise King to explore the natural world through sound making within the grounds of the Ecovillage – an international award winning eco community on the Hinterland Gold Coast. Come along to this hands-on creative workshop designed for inquisitive minds and ears. Engage with the stunning natural environment in a gentle forage for materials to create your own musical work.
Create music inspired by the feel, look and shape of natural found objects. Explore form, timbre, texture and dimensions and convert them into pitch, melody, patterns, rhythm and visual patterns. Discover how to engage your imagination and your BYO instrument to create unusual sounds and technical effects inspired by the natural environment. See and hear examples of modern compositions using these techniques and discover graphic scores. Draw and plan a graphic score and perform and share your creative work in front of the other workshop participants and your family.
Children will have an opportunity to use simple musical tools, pattern-based mathematics and the visual arts to explore, develop and create art works that communicate the shape, texture and cycles of nature. Using your BYO instrument, voice or body percussion, you will have an opportunity to perform your creations at the workshop final showcase.
Presented by Teaching Artist and professional musician Louise King, this site-specific music workshop will give participants the opportunity to create, compose, sing and play music together and individually and spend time connecting with nature. Children will have the opportunity to perform their works at the final stage of the workshop and take their visual creations home.
“As the disconnection between children and nature widens, I wish to share with you my passion for nurturing inquisitive thinking and personal hands-on creativity. Through making art that we care about that also responds to our environment, we can be inspired to make better choices to care for and notice more deeply our natural surroundings. Music is all around us and for me, it is a fundamental part of every child’s education.”
Children aged 6 -14 will have the opportunity to work together, collaboratively exploring what nature and music have to offer. They will work both independently and in more specific skill oriented groups. Cello Dreaming believes in community building opportunities and the benefits that come from combining multiple age ranges and abilities in musical activities.
